چکیده

We consider a gamma-ray burst (GRB) model based on an anisotropic fireball with an axisymmetric energy distribution of the form ǫ(θ) ∝ θ, and allow for the observer’s viewing direction being at an arbitrary angle θv with respect to the jet axis. This model can reproduce the key features expected from the conventional on-axis uniform jet models, with the novelty that the achromatic break time in the broadband afterglow lightcurves corresponds to the epoch when the relativistic beaming angle is equal to the viewing angle, θv, rather than to the jet half opening angle, θj . If all the GRB fireballs have such a similar energy distribution form with 1.5 < k< ∼2, GRBs may be modeled by a quasi-universal beaming configuration, and an approximately standard energy reservoir. Emission lines in GRBs constrain the total energy reservoir

The emission features observed in the X–ray afterglow of Gamma Ray Bursts are extremely powerful. Since they last at least for several hours, they imply energies of the order of 10 ergs. This in turn implies that the energy contained in the illuminating continuum thought to be responsible of the line production must exceed 10 ergs. This is a strong lower limit to the energy reservoir of Gamma R...

A Standard Kinetic Energy Reservoir in Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows

We present a comprehensive sample of X-ray observations of 41 γ-ray burst (GRB) afterglows, as well as jet opening angles, θj for a subset with measured jet breaks. We show that there is a significant dispersion in the X-ray fluxes, and hence isotropic X-ray luminosities (LX,iso), normalized to t = 10 hr. However, there is a strong correlation between LX,iso and the beaming fractions, fb ≡ [1 −...

Beaming in Gamma-ray Bursts: Evidence for a Standard Energy Reservoir

We present a comprehensive sample of all gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows with known distances, and we derive their conical opening angles based on observed broadband breaks in their light curves. Within the framework of this conical jet model, we correct for the geometry and we find that the gamma-ray energy release is narrowly clustered around ergs. We draw three conclusions. First, the centr...

The Dynamics and Light Curves of Beamed Gamma Ray Burst Afterglows

The energy requirements of gamma ray bursts have in past been poorly constrained because of three major uncertainties: The distances to bursts, the degree of burst beaming, and the efficiency of gamma ray production. The first of these has been resolved, with both indirect evidence (the distribution of bursts in flux and position) and direct evidence (redshifted absorption features in the after...

Testing the Predictions of the Universal - Structured Jet Model of Gamma - Ray Bursts by Simulations ⋆

Based on the standard energy reservoir of gamma-ray burst (GRB) jets and the relationship between peak energy (Ep) of νFν spectrum and the equivalent-isotropic energy (Eiso), we test the GRB probability distributions as a function of viewing angle (θ) and of viewing angle together with redshift z, P (θ) and P (θ, z), predicted by the universal-structured jet (USJ) model with simulations on obse...
